En daardoor lijkt een lichtgewicht, breed en enduro-klaar carbonwiel iets uit een sprookje, maar gelukkig hebben wij het werkelijkheid gemaakt. De Traverse SL Fattie combineert alle eigenschappen die je nodig hebt in een all-mountain wiel in één pakket, en de resultaten spreken voor zich.\u003cbr \/\u003eTijdens onze prototypefase hebben de velgen twee seizoenen lang zwaar gebruik doorstaan op het Enduro World Series-circuit onder Curtis Keene, en zijn sindsdien bewezen door Jared Graves en tal van andere rijders wereldwijd.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMaar bestempel de Traverse SL Fattie niet te snel als louter een onverwoestbaar, zwaar carbonwiel — er is veel meer te vertellen.\u003cbr \/\u003eOndanks zijn robuuste naam zijn de Traverse SL Fatties weliswaar breed, maar met een binnenvelgbreedte van 30mm zijn ze verre van de omvang van een fat bike-velg. Maar waarom zo breed? Welnu, je hebt waarschijnlijk opgemerkt dat de velgbreedtes van mountainbikes decennialang tussen de 19 en 23 millimeter hebben geschommeld, en dat een verandering al lang overdue was. Op zoek naar een beter wielontwerp begonnen onze ingenieurs 2,3 tot 2,5 inch banden te testen op 45 millimeter brede fat bike-velgen om te zien welke voordelen dit zou opleveren. Na slechts een paar ritten realiseerden ze zich dat de bredere velgen diverse voordelen boden: meer bandvolume, wat de banden beter ondersteunt bij hard bochtenwerk, de tractie aanzienlijk verbetert dankzij de mogelijkheid om lagere bandspanning te rijden, en de velgstijfheid merkbaar verhoogt.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eZe merkten wel op dat er een punt van afnemende meerwaarde optreedt bij toenemende breedte, en na het testen van alles tussen 25mm en 45mm, concludeerden ze dat een binnenvelgbreedte van 30mm de optimale breedte bood.\u003cbr \/\u003eNa het bepalen van de breedte begonnen we de velg te ontwerpen op basis van kennis die we hadden opgedaan bij de ontwikkeling van de Control SL. Fout.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOndanks de naam 'fattie' zijn ze verre van zwaar. Tijdens de ontwikkeling van de Control SL leerden we het belang van het gebruik van high modulus koolstofvezel om gewicht te besparen, en we hebben deze technologie verwerkt in de Traverse SL Fattie-velg. Het resultaat is een all-mountain wiel dat, met 1600 gram, even licht is als veel wielen in de XC-categorie. Om dit gewicht te bereiken bouwen we onze velgen met de hand op onze eigen aluminium naven, uitsluitend met DT Swiss Revolution-spaken van de hoogste kwaliteit.
